Hallucination

Sixteen pages of a single night, drawn by hand: the whole book sits on the line between the dream and the thing that actually happened.

The brief

A personal project with no brief but my own — sixteen pages, script and drawings both mine, with characters taken from the television series Dexter.

The move

The script is one night: pain, lust, death, delusion, mind games. The whole thing turns on never letting the reader settle on which parts happened, so the drawing has to carry that doubt rather than the words. Everything is freehand graphite, the panels break where the night breaks, and the title — ΠΑΡΑΙΣΘΗΣΗ, hallucination — is set repeating and overlapping until the word stops being readable.

The detail

Red is the only colour in the book and it is rationed: the pages stay graphite until blood arrives, so when it does the page changes temperature. Everything was drawn by hand first and taken into Photoshop only afterwards, which is why the marks still look made rather than placed.
